The new GIVI ALP44 Alpina top case may look familiar, but don't be mistaken. This is a Monolock top case made of aluminium, making it the first 'angular' aluminium case in the Monolock series.
Typically, Monolock cases are lightweight and made of plastic, often featuring rounded shapes. They are mounted on a (supplied) top case plate and, due to their less robust nature, are primarily focused on commuting or urban traffic. This new top case model clearly shares a strong visual resemblance to other motorcycle cases used on GSs, Tigers, and Multistradas, but those are Monokey cases.
In other words, this Alpina is a kind of combination, with a twist.
The Alpina top case is indeed made of aluminium, like the Monokey cases, albeit with a material thickness of 1.2 mm to ensure the characteristic lightness of the Monolock series. And the twist? It lies in the new Crablock system, which allows the top case to be detached from the plate by pulling a lever inside. So, it's not entirely 'Monolock' after all...
A patent has been applied for the new Crablock system—the name somewhat reflects how the closure actually works. The fact that you must first open the GIVI ALP44 Alpina top case (with a key) before you can detach it (by turning a lever) adds an extra layer of security.
With a volume of 44 litres, the GIVI ALP44 Alpina is a fairly spacious top case. Within the Monolock series (which, until now, has preferred more rounded shapes), it is one of the largest.
The choice of thin aluminium ensures that this top case can hold up to three kilograms.
Watertightness: the GIVI side cases and top cases are not waterproof. They were awarded an IPX4 rating. Having the right expectations always helps prevent disappointment.
