Length of a motorcycle cable lock

When choosing a cable lock for your motorcycle, it’s mainly about practical usability: you need to be able to secure your bike to a fixed object while still carrying the cable easily.

What length is enough?

A good rule of thumb is:
minimum 120–150 cm
but 130–180 cm is ideal for most situations.

Why these lengths?

• Less than ~120 cm: often too short to properly secure your motorcycle to a fixed object. Usually limited to locking one wheel (less secure).
• Around 130–150 cm: good balance for securing frame + wheel without being too bulky.
• Up to ~180 cm: more flexibility for larger objects, but less convenient to carry.

Practical guidelines

• 130–150 cm – Best balance between usability and portability
• 150–180 cm – Extra flexibility for difficult parking situations
• <120 cm – Often too short for secure locking
• >180 cm – Can become inconvenient to carry

Tip for daily use

A cable lock should not only be long enough, but also easy to transport:

• Prefer a lightweight and flexible model
• Some riders combine a cable lock with a U-lock for extra security

Summary

Aim for a length between 130 and 180 cm for the best balance of security and convenience.

The ART certification is a Dutch quality label that indicates the level of theft protection offered by a motorcycle or scooter lock. This certification is issued by the ART Foundation and is an important requirement for many insurance companies. The higher the number of ART stars, the more rigorous the testing and the higher the level of theft resistance.

• ART 3: three-star locks provide good theft protection for mopeds, scooters and bicycles with a high theft risk. For mopeds and scooters, insurers generally require at least an ART 3-certified lock.
• ART 4: four-star locks are designed for motorcycles and offer a high level of theft protection. They are suitable for use on the road and meet the minimum requirements set by most motorcycle insurers.
• ART 5: five-star locks provide the highest level of theft protection and are tested against longer attack times using heavier tools. Due to their weight, these locks are mainly used to secure motorcycles at home or at a fixed parking location.

SRA certification is an official French approval for motorcycle locks. SRA stands for Sécurité et Réparation Automobiles, an independent organization that tests locks for resistance against theft.

A lock with SRA certification has been thoroughly tested against various attack methods such as cutting, sawing, pulling, prying, and cylinder manipulation. Only locks that meet strict standards receive official SRA approval.

• Yes: The lock is SRA-certified and complies with French security standards. This may be required by certain insurers, especially in France.
• No: The lock does not have SRA certification. Check with your insurer whether this is required for your policy.

SRA certification is mainly required by insurers in France but can also serve as an additional quality guarantee in other countries.

Steel cable type

This specification indicates the type of steel cable used in the cable lock. Its construction and any additional protection directly affect the security level.

• Single – A single braided steel cable made of multiple fine steel strands. Lightweight, flexible, and easy to use, but it provides only a basic level of theft protection.
• Double – A braided steel cable with hardened steel sleeves around it. This increases resistance against cutting and sawing, offering a higher security level than a single cable.

Weight of a cable lock

The weight of a cable lock directly affects usability and security level. The lighter the lock, the easier it is to carry. The heavier it is, the more resistance it offers against theft.

Below is a practical classification:

• 0 – 0.8 kg: Very lightweight and easy to carry. Ideal for short stops or as secondary protection.
• 0.8 – 1.5 kg: The best balance between portability and security. Perfect for daily use and regular parking.
• 1.5+ kg: Maximum protection within cable locks. Ideal for fixed parking or higher theft-risk areas.

Tip: Choose the weight based on your usage. For daily riding, a light to medium cable lock is usually sufficient, while heavier models provide extra security when your motorcycle is parked for longer periods.

The application indicates which type of two-wheeler the lock is suitable for. Not all locks offer the same level of security or compatibility, so choosing a lock that matches the type of bicycle, scooter or motorcycle is essential.

• Bicycle: bicycle locks are designed for lower weight and a lower theft risk. They are suitable for city bikes and e-bikes, but generally do not provide sufficient security for scooters or motorcycles.
• Scooter: locks for scooters and mopeds offer a higher level of theft protection than bicycle locks, with a good balance between security and weight. They are suited to lighter motorised two-wheelers.
• Motorcycle: motorcycle locks are the heaviest and offer the highest level of theft protection. They are designed to withstand more aggressive attack methods and are suitable for motorcycles with a high theft risk.

Some locks come with a built-in alarm, providing extra deterrence in addition to mechanical protection.

• Yes – The lock has an integrated alarm that triggers when movement or tampering is detected. Ideal for busy or public areas, as it increases visibility and discourages thieves.
• No – The lock provides only mechanical protection. Simple, maintenance-free, and suitable for users who do not need an additional sound alert.

Tip: Alarms are useful if you often park your motorcycle or scooter outdoors or in higher-risk theft areas.
