Screen resolution describes how many picture elements (pixels) a screen can display. The more pixels there are, the sharper and more detailed the image. A higher resolution makes maps, routes, and other information easier to read, even in bright sunlight or at high speeds. This makes the use of the device more intuitive and comfortable.

The “Battery life” specification indicates how long the GPS unit can operate on a full battery. For most motorcycle GPS devices, battery life is of less concern, as they come with an active mount that connects the unit directly to the motorcycle’s battery. This allows the GPS to be used virtually indefinitely while the motorcycle is running.

Waterproofing is a crucial feature for a motorcycle GPS, as the device is exposed to rain, splashes, and other weather conditions. All modern motorcycle GPS units are waterproof and meet the IPX7 standard, meaning they can be temporarily submerged without damage.

Map coverage indicates which maps are included with the GPS unit by default. This determines in which regions you can use the device for navigation right away. Some GPS units come with maps of specific countries or continents, while other models provide broader coverage, allowing you to explore multiple countries or regions without additional purchases.

Includes lifetime map updates indicates whether the GPS unit automatically receives all future map updates at no additional cost. This ensures that your maps remain up to date, keeping routes and navigation information reliable, without the need to purchase new maps regularly.

Map expansions indicates whether it is possible to purchase and add additional maps to the GPS unit. This allows you to extend the standard map coverage to other countries or regions, keeping the device flexible for future trips.

Internal memory indicates the storage capacity of the GPS unit, expressed in gigabytes. The larger the internal memory, the more maps you can install and the more routes and waypoints you can store on the device. Ample storage capacity allows flexible use without having to constantly delete files.

An SD card slot allows you to expand the GPS unit’s storage capacity with a separate SD card. This enables you to install extra maps or place routes and waypoints on the device. Note: an SD card is never included and must be purchased separately.

Speed camera warning indicates whether the GPS unit alerts you when approaching fixed speed cameras and other permanent speed control zones, such as average speed checks. Most modern motorcycle GPS devices include this feature as standard. If not, it can usually be added as an optional feature through a separate purchase.

Traffic information indicates whether the GPS unit receives, displays, and incorporates real-time traffic data when calculating routes. This allows the device to avoid delays or other slowdowns and suggest alternative routes, helping you reach your destination faster and more efficiently.

Lane Guard indicates whether the GPS unit clearly shows which lane to take at junctions, exits, and merge lanes. This helps you position yourself in advance and makes navigating busy roads and complex intersections much easier and safer.

This specification indicates whether the GPS unit can play voice navigation prompts. This can be done in several ways:

• Yes: instructions can be heard via a built-in speaker or a connected intercom.
• No: the device does not provide spoken instructions.
• Only via connected intercom: some GPS units do not have a built-in speaker and can only play instructions through a connected intercom.

The winding route function helps motorcyclists find the most curvy and adventurous roads, avoiding boring straight sections. When planning a route, you can select the desired level of curves, usually ranging from low to high. This allows you to tailor the ride to your preference for twists and turns, creating a customized, adrenaline-filled experience.

This specification indicates whether the GPS unit can play music while riding. Depending on the device, this can be done in several ways:

• No: the device cannot play music.
• Built-in MP3 player: music can be played directly on the device via a built-in player.
• Music streaming from a connected smartphone: music is played from a smartphone paired with the GPS unit.

This specification indicates whether the GPS unit supports hands-free calling. It allows you to answer incoming calls from a paired smartphone directly via the GPS device. To hear the calls while riding, a connected helmet intercom is required. The unit displays who is calling, enabling safe and convenient communication.

This specification indicates whether the GPS unit comes with a car mount and charger for in-car use. Depending on the device, this can be:

• Yes: all accessories are included to use the GPS in the car.
• Optional: accessories can be purchased separately to use the GPS in the car.
• No: the device cannot be used in the car.

This specification indicates whether the GPS unit can be protected against theft by locking it in the mount. This is useful if you leave your GPS on the motorcycle, ensuring it cannot be stolen. Depending on the device, this can be:

• Yes: the GPS can be locked in the mount.
• No: there is no option to lock the device.
• Optional: the locking function can be purchased as an additional accessory.

This specification indicates whether the GPS unit can be used not only in the standard landscape orientation but also in portrait orientation. Both orientations have advantages: landscape provides more space for additional information, while portrait makes the route more visible.
