Women's textile motorcycle jacket

For whom?

To the delight of all concerned, the time when women had to crawl on a motorcycle with small men's jackets is over. Today, all manufacturers of textile jackets have a full range of women's jackets, including many types, sizes and styles.
Textile motorcycle jackets can be sporty, casual or touring. Women's jackets are often centred and contemporary models are also fashionable off the bike. So there is something for everyone.

The big advantage of textile is that it fits well from day one and doesn't change after that. Besides that, you can also count on a very high degree of protection against weather, wind and temperature. In all directions. Wet or dry, hot or cold.

It goes without saying that modern textile jackets, in addition to a durable choice of materials, also have all possible impact protectors on board.

Membrane choice

Besides style, design, color and personal comfort, one of the main considerations when buying a textile jacket is the choice of membrane.

The various membrane brands can be divided into two major groups. Sympathex and GORE-TEX populate group 1. All other brand names make up group 2.

Group 1 is preferred by true motorcycle adventurers and riders who commute to work on two wheels in all conditions. Sympathex and GORE-TEX can withstand high water pressure, are durable and have unsurpassed breathability.

If you prefer less extreme products, or if you are more budget-conscious, all the other membrane brands in group 2 are a good alternative. They are of course just as water- and windproof and also have a breathable capacity, but these membranes reach their saturation point a bit faster. At that point water penetrates the membrane or body moisture condenses on the membrane.

Membrane integration

Membranes can be integrated in a jacket in three ways: lamination, fixed integration or detachable/removable. As always: each method has its advantages.

If you mainly go out in bad weather, it's best to choose a membrane that is laminated onto the outer fabric. Water can't attach itself ('like water from a duck') to the jacket, which won't absorb anything this way. The result is a lighter and quicker drying jacket.

Passengers, commuters or motorcyclists who ride in many conditions with one jacket are better off with a detachable membrane. If it's dry or too warm, you can unzip the membrane, open the ventilation zippers and in no time you'll have a more summery outfit.

The third option, a jacket with a fixed integrated membrane, is choosing for relative simplicity. The jacket is wind- and waterproof and the space between the outer fabric and the membrane is ventilated, but ventilation is more indirect and less pleasant when temperatures really soar.

The outer fabric and the membranes of textile motorcycle jackets are more demanding than, say, a T-shirt or a pair of socks. Everything is possible, but specific maintenance products for motorcycle clothing are really no marketing trick. General detergents can damage the properties of membranes and outer fabric, so always look carefully at the info for maintaining motorcycle clothing.

Tip from the RAD house

If you don't want to deal with the winter and the deluge of rain, you could invest in a rain suit. You go out in all comfort and even a heavy rain shower doesn't spoil your riding pleasure. A rain suit ensures that your jacket does not absorb water, is not heavy and does not have to dry afterwards. Always worth considering.
