No, it's not the nicest thing to do and for convenience's sake you sometimes forget to do it, but with normal use on public roads cleaning your chain every 1000 kilometres is certainly recommended. After long rides in wet conditions it can be done more often.
How to clean the chain?
Forget all home, garden and kitchen remedies such as universal degreasers, heating oil, petroleum and the like. They don't offer a good, lasting solution and can also damage the O-rings in the links, shortening the chain's life span with a lot. You don't want. Better choose a specially developed chain cleaner for this purpose.
It will also make the job a lot smoother, faster and easier. It won't damage the chain and all road grime and old grease will be removed.
Don't forget to lubricate your chain again, chain spray after cleaning!
